Wooden coat hangers – natural and sustainable

Wooden Coat Hangers – The Sustainable Choice for Your Wardrobe

Wooden coat hangers are high-quality and environmentally friendly – we manufacture them exclusively from FSC®-certified wood.

Why Do You Need Coat Hangers?

Good coat hangers serve many functions. They enable clothing stores to display fashion attractively, help you keep your wardrobe organized, and support your sustainable lifestyle:

Your coats, blouses, and pants retain their shape and are preserved when you hang them on the appropriate coat hanger.

Wooden coat hangers are thus a part of textile care as well as a contribution to environmental protection – especially when they are made from sustainably grown, certified wood like ours.

From the classic suit hanger in beech to wardrobe hangers, pants hangers, and skirt hangers, to coat hangers with ribbed bars or a form hanger with wider shoulders: At MAWA, you will find a selection of around fifty different wooden hangers made from beech and ash wood – untreated, stained, waxed, or environmentally friendly water-based lacquered.
Contact us now for prices and further information.

Our classic coat hangers are designed so that blouses, shirts, jackets, and dresses hang perfectly. The rounded shape supports the shoulder area (goodbye shoulder bumps!). And thanks to the skirt notches, you can hang your entire outfit.

Also practical: All hangers have the same "hanging height" – this ensures a visually organized closet.

Since When Have Wooden Coat Hangers Existed?

A few years ago, we researched for our company chronicle to find out how long coat hangers have existed in the world.

What we found is interesting: Six hundred years ago, in 1425, a certain Lorenz Schneider was depicted with a hanger.

About 250 years ago, the first ready-to-wear clothing store was founded in Paris, a business that manufactured clothing in series.

These businesses, like the first textile shops, wanted to present their clothing well and thus were important customers for coat hangers and other hanging options.

In 1836, almost two hundred years ago, coats were first manufactured in series in Berlin. Thirty years later, wooden coat hangers also appeared in Wilhelm Busch's stories of Max and Moritz.

In 1899, Sinram and Wendt founded a coat hanger factory in Hanover, producing primarily wooden coat hangers. The company later became known as Union.

And in 1955, MAWA GmbH registered its patent for the pants stretcher – so we have been manufacturing coat hangers in Pfaffenhofen, Upper Bavaria, for three-quarters of a century!

"Metal and wooden coat hangers from MAWA are simply synonymous with quality for our customers around the world." – Michaela Schenk, Managing Director of MAWA

Why Are Coat Hangers Still Made of Wood Today?

Wood is a natural material and feels pleasant to the touch. It is not surprising that wooden coat hangers are extremely stable and also "tactile," meaning they feel very nice when handled.

Especially when made from beech – the proven wood for making coat hangers for centuries.

To make them particularly pleasant to hold, we at MAWA seal the hangers and sand them four times to ensure the surface is especially smooth.

The notches for skirts on our hangers are meticulously crafted to ensure no rough spots can damage the textiles. The hooks on our wooden hangers are fully rotatable and stable because we make them from beech wood. A MAWA coat hanger can last for decades, which is part of what we mean by sustainable.

We primarily manufacture our wooden hangers from beech wood, sourced from ecological and sustainable forestry with FSC® certification (Certificate Number SCS-COC-007973). Beech wood has the advantage of being very stable compared to other woods, which is crucial for a coat hanger that needs to support heavy jackets and coats.

Additionally, beech is very easy to work with: it is much easier to cut, sand, and process compared to oak. It can also be sanded beautifully smooth, unlike bamboo, which is often used in the industrial production of cheap hangers. Bamboo is a very brittle wood that splinters easily, which cheap producers try to compensate for by applying thick layers of lacquer to their hangers – unfortunately, this is not environmentally friendly.

"Beech has been the tried and true wood for hangers for centuries because it has high stability and is very easy to work with." – Michaela Schenk, Managing Director of MAWA

How Are Wooden Coat Hangers Produced?

MAWA is a truly German company with a long tradition since 1948. For our wooden coat hangers, we use water-soluble lacquers that are environmentally safe. Additionally, we rely on certified wood that is sustainably grown.

Not only is the wood we process certified, but our entire company is FSC® (FSC-C123656) certified (Certificate Number SCS-COC-007973). We undergo an audit every two years to maintain this certification.

FSC® stands for "Forest Stewardship Council" and is an international certification system for sustainable forestry. Its goal is to ensure that forests worldwide are managed in an environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable manner.
To obtain the FSC® seal, companies must meet and demonstrate compliance with numerous standards, such as ensuring that the forests from which they source their wood are managed according to strict ecological and social principles.

"Especially in France and Italy, where fashion plays a significant role, many people trust our high-quality wooden coat hangers." – Michaela Schenk, Managing Director of MAWA

Wooden Coat Hangers – Our Range

From the simple and time-tested standard hanger made of untreated beech for sweaters, T-shirts, and more, to the classic combination hanger with skirt notches and bar, to the exclusive wardrobe hanger with shoulder extension – our collections feature more than fifty wooden coat hangers to suit your needs:

Natural waxed, stained, or colorfully lacquered wood, for light tops, complete suits and costumes, heavy jackets and coats, in different widths for children, women, and men, with clip bars, as clamp hangers, or even a "valet stand" – and we even offer consultation if you're not quite sure which model best suits your needs.

Wooden Coat Hangers for Business Customers

MAWA coat hangers come in various widths, corresponding to clothing sizes. Typically, we recommend 30 cm wide hangers for children, 41 cm wide hangers for women, and 45 cm wide wooden hangers for men.

Fun Fact: When women buy coat hangers, they often focus on saving space in their closets. In contrast, our numbers show that men prefer comfortable, large hangers that can accommodate an entire suit. Shirts are then often hung on narrow metal hangers in between.

"For men, a comfortable, large wooden coat hanger for their suits is often a kind of status symbol." – Michaela Schenk, Managing Director of MAWA

Clothes Hanger Made from Ash Wood

In the Country series, we focus on the very special wood of European ash. It has an elegant grain and unique structures, giving it a very noble appearance.

By sanding already lacquered wooden hangers, this special wax look is created – the hangers acquire a unique, velvety surface.

Wooden Hangers for Hotels

You’ve probably already hung your jacket or blouse on a MAWA hanger without even knowing it: many hotels also have their clothes hangers made by us.

Specifically for hotels, we offer three collections: the MAWA Basic Line, Business Line, and Design Line. Hotels can choose from a variety of finishes, ranging from natural to waxed, stained, or colorfully lacquered.

Custom-Made Hangers for Hotels and Shops

Custom-made hangers are also available in other types of wood and, of course, in any conceivable color combination.

The hook on top completes the design; it is available in black or white, gold or copper, matte or glossy.

And, of course, with anti-theft protection: we use a so-called hotel pin. This means the hook is closed at the top, so you can't take the entire hanger off the rack, only the lower wooden part.

Because, yes... our hangers are so popular that hotel guests would love to take them home :-)

MAWA – A Brand of the Century

Two years ago, our company was included in the ranks of German "Century Brands."

This distinction as a "German Standard" is awarded to German companies that "demonstrate greatness (...) and set standards," as Dr. Florian Langenscheidt, the founder of the initiative, says.

"They are the foundation for social responsibility: with a spirit of innovation and foresight. With lived tradition. With significant economic power."

In addition to brands like Märklin, Melitta, Langnese, and Hipp, MAWA is now officially among the "icons of the German economy."

Sustainability is a top priority at MAWA – and not just for our wooden hangers.

We do not use any toxic or harmful substances and are explicitly against hangers that contain dangerous materials – as they come into direct contact with our skin daily.

For this reason, we have initiated the ECO friendly and SKIN friendly initiatives for our metal hangers – they are free from phthalate-containing plasticizers and heavy metals.

We do not carry plastic hangers in our range because this material is not sustainable for us. Instead, we develop hangers from new ECO materials that consist of plant-based residues and also sequester CO2.

As a company, we are also committed to the United Nations "Agenda 2030": by the year 2030, we aim to produce carbon-neutral.

Countless customers see us as a reliable partner who has embraced sustainability: annually, we produce around 20 million hangers for customers in 90 countries. Maybe soon for you too?
